Indonesia’s BMKG said the tsunami potential from a magnitude 7.7 earthquake near Flores had ended after the strong early-Saturday quake triggered coastal evacuations. 🌏
The quake damaged homes and public facilities across Flores, including reports of a collapsed port-terminal waiting room in Maumere. No official damage total or confirmed fatalities had been released in initial reports.
Preliminary USGS reporting placed the quake at 10 km deep and north-northwest of Ende; BMKG’s later notice listed a 15 km depth and a point northeast of Mbay. Such early earthquake parameters can be revised as more seismic data are analysed.
BMKG’s initial alert covered parts of East and West Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi, with modelling for waves of 0.5 to 3 metres. The Guardian reported measured waves of 19 to 30 cm before the warning ended; damage and injury assessments remain pending. 🌊
