Do you buy board games knowing they'll rarely be played?

First time posting here, sorry if I make any mistakes.

I'm thinking of buying Terraforming Mars and/or SETI to own myself. I love these games when I played them at BG cafe events, they're the perfect mix of space exploration, a hand of cards to mix things up, and engine building for point collection.

The problem is I don't know a lot of people that also enjoy these 2 games. I own simpler games like Splendor, Gizmos, Patchwork,... that are much more accessible for friends, but I'm worried that Mars and SETI would just collect dust since they're relatively too complex and time-consuming.

I expect these 2 games would be played like once or twice a year if I'm lucky. I love playing them, but would it be worth it to own them at that rate? I don't collect things just to have them take up space, I prefer having stuff that can be used somewhat regularly, so that's the dilemma.

Alternatively, there's Tabletop Simulator on Steam. I haven't used it personally, but have seen plenty of people on Youtube playing anything from Catan to Extreme Monopoly on there. Would that be good to use in place of buying physical versions?

Thank you!
