Hi everyone! I just got done reading The Bell Jar and I’m confused- I’m wondering how is it that I simultaneously loathe the book and find Ester insufferable and annoying, BUT also find this book so well written with incredible dialogue, palpable angst, and have themes as deep and profound as one is willing to go? Truly, while I was reading it I wanted to get it over with because I found it tedious to read, almost like I was watching someone’s annoying live twitter feed that I couldn’t stop reading; yet at the same time, I’m both relating to AND imagining this hellscape in a manicured garden. To me it almost felt like the excess of Great Gatsby paired with a less amorous offset of Young Werther (emotional and unstable but not at all a facade), just joined.
All that to say did anyone else come away feeling 50/50 both loving and hating this book? #entertainment
