Help with van selection high Rockies for year round…

Help with van selection high Rockies for year round dwelling/commuting

So I did van life on a beach/ island. It was magic.

Now life has me in the high altitude regions of the Rockies for the next 3 years. Or sure if yall have noticed rent prices here but…. No thank you after this winter I’m good and getting rid of my ridiculous lease.

I will need to use van to commute to work and school as well as clinicals at hospitals and may be traveling 300-600 miles some weeks and staying in one place other weeks.

Van life will hopefully allow me to pay down student loans and would be super convenient with work schedules/ locations as I move around a bit. Otherwise I’d be paying rent PLUS travel fees including hotels often. I’m allowed to use work parking lots for sleeping as long as I’m on call. And I have outlined plenty of camping areas for the non snowy months that are easy access.

My main concern is just reliability on the roads in winter, and for that reason was looking at transit awd slightly used vans. I’d be on snow and winter roads half the year for at least 2-3 years. After that I have ability to transfer out of this region.

I also have a neighbor selling a Chevy Astro van awd, super cheap but I’m definitely not a mechanic and I have a job that I absolutely cannot be late for so as much as I’d love the budget savings, it may cost me in the long run if I break down.

Showers are available at my school and work so I’m not concerned about that aspect.

If I sell my car and use some savings I’d say my budget is around $40k before a build out.

Is a transit awd slightly used the best bet for my situation?
