The U.S. Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital announced a US$400 million conditional loan commitment to Sunrise Energy Metals for the Syerston Scandium Project in New South Wales, Australia. ⛏️ The announcement was made on Friday, August 7, and reported on Saturday, August 8.
The proposed project would be a primary source of scandium, a metal usually recovered as a by-product of other mining. The U.S. agency said the financing is intended to support mining, metallisation and additive-manufacturing capability, creating a supply chain from ore to finished material.
The commitment does not mean the loan has been disbursed: Sunrise must still meet financial, legal, technical and other conditions before financial close. The agency said it would receive a right of first offer on project output, potentially directing supply toward U.S. defence-industrial customers. ⚙️
The plan sits within a broader U.S.–Australia critical-minerals partnership launched in October 2025. Sunrise’s March 2026 feasibility study projected first-train capacity of 60 tonnes of scandium oxide a year and targeted commercial production in mid-2028, subject to development and financing milestones.
