thFor the curious: Tanzania elections on 29 November.
Hey all, I noticed there isn't much about Tanzanian elections in this sub. Just thought to share these links (in English) for anyone interested.
There is a planned revolution on 29 October. Whether or not enough people will show up is in question since Tanzanians have never attempted such a thing with similar momentum.
Some of these links that I'm sharing are from western sources and journalists because censorship in Tanzania is very very real. It is very difficult to find more than one local publications that ask the right questions.
Key things to know:
1. CCM has been in power forever. First there was TANU which merged with the Afro-Shirazi Party of Zanzibar after unification to form CCM in 1977.
2. Disappearances/kidnappings (caught on video) have become very common. They started under Kikwete but have significantly increased during Samia's time. Here is a recent Amnesty International report about it and a BBC Africa video report on some cases.
3. Samia's election run is heavily contested even in her own party. It seems that the party didn't follow its own constitution in "selecting her". Even this guy, Humphrey Polepole, who is a CCM party member wrote a letter detailing this when he resigned as ambassador of Cuba and started releasing insider information about the party, then he was abducted a few weeks ago.
4. CHADEMA, the most popular opposition party, will not be participating in the election. They refused to sign the code of conduct citing a need for reforms. The electoral commission is not truly independent.
5. There is widespread corruption of unprecedented scale that has been uncovered. To give you a summary, the opposition leader Tundu Lissu (CHADEMA) who is currently on trial for "treason" was arrested shortly after he started to question some shady dealings with the President and her network regarding coal mines. plus many other things including the President's sons, head of intelligence, head of police having very many luxury cars the likes of Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, etc...with very similar registration numbers or owned by the same company which happens to be a company that received tenders to import sugar, mine lithium, coal and other resources. Basically it's bad. Here are some photos.
6. The president's son, his name is Abdul, is linked to almost all the corruption mentioned above and more, disappearings and other unconstitutional activities. He was a nobody before and now has excessive wealth, homes in Dubai, luxury cars.

Obviously no reasonable person wants a military rule but there are obviously those who call for it bc they think it may be the better alternative or doesn't change much, one sane view I've seen is to have an interim civilian leader (such as this guy, Judge Warioba, former PM and Vice President: https://thechanzo.com/2024/12/04/calls-to-separate-politicking-from-security-organs-intensify-as-judge-warioba-weighs-in-leave-the-military-out-of-politics/)
9. CHADEMA's John Heche was recently arrested and detained. Shortly before he was also denied travel to Kenya for Raila Odinga's funeral: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy9pd2j0138o

Most celebrities, including the famous ones like Diamond Platnumz and others are paid by CCM to promote the party, perform at their rallies, call for "peace" and even distract the general public from political discourse. They also make songs praising Samia, did the same with Magufuli. Just check their Spotify pages...Some have even attempted to run or successfully ran for parliament.
11. Samia's campaign has been....excessive: free bikes to people in the rural areas (made in China), green buses for Dar es Salaam's transport system after the blue buses we had/have have become broken down, unusable and the whole system faced with so many delays of up to hours. 12. In this election, at almost every campaign stop, children in secondary schools, public servants and some primary schools have been told to go to school without uniforms then bussed to the rallies and sometimes given break and soda or money, all to make it look like CCM rallies are crowded and that the party is popular.
13. Now the "independent" electoral commission has been telling people to go vote even using their national IDs instead of voter's IDs...which isn't the norm. Allegedly, expected voter turn out is very low so they need to legitimize Samia's win by encouraging people to vote no matter what.
