I've been researching a question that struck up as I've begun reading 'Lord of the Flies' by Sir Golding - of questionable relevance perhaps, but puzzling all the same.
There are numerous references to Roger's skin colour throughout the novel - a novel that doesn't explicitly name anybody's race.
For example:
"When Roger opened his eyes and saw him, a darker shadow crept beneath the swarthiness of his skin..."
"He was not noticeably darker than when he had dropped in..."
"The dark boy, Roger, stirred at last and spoke up." "A dark figure moved against the tide."
There's also another random drop of a second characters skin described this way in "A dark little boy, not much younger than Piggy..." in Chapter 1.
Whilst it's not quite sufficient to be conclusive, does anybody have any thoughts on this? I've already noticed the somewhat obvious Eurocentric agenda in the description of Ralph, and am seeing if this is another connection or simply me seeing something that just isn't there.
