How do I understand hard books

I've been reading The Brothers Karamazov over the past few months and I have enjoyed it, especially following my reading along with the Sparknotes commentary. Allowing me to really understand what the book is trying to say. However for future reads of hard books I'm not sure how to best approach it. How should I research what to pre-read or understand before I get into a work? I plan to read Infinite Jest and Walden in the near future so I believe I should aim to understand postmodernism and transcendentalism more, but I'm not sure what works specifically.

How do you approach difficult books like this?
