Delimitation is making me question if absolute democracy is actually good??
guys we seriously need to talk about the upcoming delimitation stuff because honestly its been making my head spin. Every time I think about it, it just raises this super uncomfortable question: is the absolute pursuit of "one person one vote" always the fairest thing? whenever u look at the options, every single one of them feels wrong. there are very real, legitimate reasons why each side wants what they want, but the sheer hypocrisy mixed in from all sides is just exhausting.
let's look at the South's dilemma first. u have to understand why they are so frustrated. For decades the govt begged states to control their population. The southern states actually listened, controlled their TFR, stabilized, and grew their economies. It makes complete sense why they are angry. if we go purely by population now, they lose massive political power. It literally feels like they are being punished for good governance and progress. Stripping away their voice feels fundamentally unjust. BUT we also absolutely have to call out the hypocrisy here. You see some people from the south calling north indians "illiterate" or "freeloaders" acting like they built their wealth completely in a vacuum. But history says otherwise. The Freight Equalization Policy (1952 to 1993) literally subsidized the transport of minerals like coal and iron from states like Bihar, UP, and Jharkhand so industries could be set up cheaply in coastal southern and western states. The south built a lot of its massive industrial base by draining the north and east of its natural resources at artificial, dirt cheap rates while the north remained structurally stunted. U can't extract someone else's resources to build ur mansion and then mock them for being poor.
Then u have the North demanding we stick strictly to population. And honestly, their core argument is completely valid: "one person one vote" is the bedrock of democracy. Why should a citizen in UP or Bihar have mathematically less voting power than a citizen in Kerala? Every human life should have the exact same political weight, regardless of their state's GDP or birth rates. But the hypocrisy here is that they are basically demanding to be rewarded with immense national political power for failing at basic governance and human development. They completely failed to control their TFR for decades, and now they want to dominate the lok sabha based on that exact failure.
And then u have people arguing "ok well lets base it on GDP or tax contribution instead". I get the frustration here too. richer states feel like they are funding the entire country's welfare schemes but have diminishing say in how that money is spent. It feels like taxation without fair representation. But man, that is a terrifying slope. The hypocrisy of the rich states here is insane. they generate all that GDP and tax revenue by selling to the massive consumer market of the North and using the cheap migrant labor from the North. U cant profit off millions of north indians to run your factories and buy your goods, and then say those same people shouldn't have equal voting rights. Plus, if we start tying political power to wealth generation, we are essentially abandoning democracy. Does that mean the owners of massive big companies should just get their own personal lok sabha seat? It completely destroys the most basic rule of equality.
So what, do we just keep things frozen at the current level? That feels super wrong too. Right now, because seats have been frozen for decades, the math is completely broken. A democracy where one citizens vote is mathematically worth half of another citizens vote is struggling to even call itself a true democracy. I feel like im stuck between a rock and a hard place. If we go by population, we honor democratic math but punish progress and reward bad governance. If we go by GDP, we give taxpayers a voice but abandon one person one vote and reward wealth. If we keep the status quo, we avoid chaos but accept a broken, mathematically unequal democracy. Every single path feels like a core pillar of our country takes a massive hit. The hypocrisy combined with the very real, valid fears from every single side just proves there is no clean answer here. just a really messy reality.
