Burmese Days is so different from Orwell's other books?
In a book group I'm in, we just finished *Burmese Days* by George Orwell. It's a pretty good book about British colonialism in Burma, though I thought the ending was kind of flat. We had just read *A Passage to India,* which I think is a superior version of this type of story, though they have many commonalities.
I'm wondering about how Orwell went from writing a fairly typical colonialist novel to the allegorical *Animal Farm* and *1984*. It was interesting to see connections, as *Burmese Days* definitely is critiquing politics and the state, but this one feels like he's aping people like Forster and Conrad, whereas his two most famous novels feel like he's free and just doing his own thing.
