Dolly Parton, the American country singer-songwriter, actor and philanthropist, has died at 80. Her publicist said she died peacefully in Nashville. 🎵
Parton wrote and recorded songs including “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You” and “9 to 5,” building a career that crossed country music, pop, film and television.
Her songwriting reached well beyond her own recordings: Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You” became a major later pop hit. Reporting credited Parton with 25 U.S. country No 1 singles and 47 country top-10 albums.
Her Imagination Library, founded in 1995, mails free age-appropriate books each month to enrolled children from birth to age five. The programme has distributed more than 200 million books since its launch. 📚
Parton also linked her public career to Tennessee through Dollywood and made philanthropic gifts including support for COVID-19 research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
