India’s Aditya-L1 solar observatory has recorded iron fluorescence during 47 powerful X-class solar flares observed in 2024, according to ISRO and a new research analysis. ☀️
The signal occurs when intense X-rays from flare-heated material in the Sun’s corona strike neutral iron in the photosphere, causing it to emit a characteristic X-ray feature. SoLEXS, one of Aditya-L1’s seven instruments, measured both the flare radiation and the fluorescence.
Researchers say the measurements may help estimate the geometry and effective height of coronal X-ray sources during major flares. The study also found a centre-to-limb pattern consistent with theoretical models, though iron abundance and statistical uncertainty still limit how precisely source heights can be determined. 🔬
Aditya-L1 operates around the Sun–Earth L1 point, about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, giving it a continuous view of the Sun and upstream measurements of solar conditions. Those observations support research into space weather, which can affect satellites, communications, navigation and power systems. 🛰️
