connections between George Orwell's 1984 and Berthold Brecht's "the life of galilei"
While reading both of these books I have both noticed similarities in topic and text. The obvious similarity is the critique of a powerful system.
Now to my question: A reoccurring phrase in "the life of galileo galilei" is that 2*2 is 4. which states Galilei's and of course Brecht's belief that logic, reason and facts should always come first and not be undermined by anyone or any entity.
This is one of the main points of George Orwell in "1984". In this book, quite early on, the expression "2*2 is 4" appears in the same context and meaning as in "the life of galileo galilei".
Galilei was published 1943, 1984 was published 1949.
Does anyone know whether the two had contact and/or got inspiration from one another. Esp. Orwell from Brecht?
