South Africa has made significant democratic progress since 1994 despite facing various challenges.
In 1994 we had the first Democratic Elections allowing all races to vote ending Apartheid. ANC won a landslide victory and Nelson Mandela was elected the first black President.
In 1999 ANC won again and with a peaceful transition Thabo Mbeki became President
2004 ANC continued to rule Mbeki re-elected
2009 New Leadership Jacob Zuma rising concerns corruption/state capture
2014 Jacob Zuma re-elected. Popularity declining due to corruption and governance issues
2019 -2024 Leadership changes following Zuma ‘s resignation and Cyril Ramaphosa becomes President. Focusing on anti corruption and economic reforms.
Challenges: Corruption, economic inequality, unemployment issues etc.
Growing Opposition Parties DA and EFF
Opposition parties oppose Government policies and actions if they believe the public interests are at stake.
We have a strong electoral oversight by the IEC (Electoral Commission ensures fair election)
