Australia has confirmed its first H5 bird-flu mass-mortality event in wildlife, affecting greater crested terns on Baudin Rocks off South Australia. Authorities are also investigating bird deaths in a second state. 🐦
The outbreak involves highly pathogenic H5N1, a virus that had been detected in Australian wild birds from June 2026 after spreading widely overseas among birds and some mammals.
The Australian Department of Agriculture had reported 53 confirmed or presumed H5 detections by 1 August, all in wild seabirds. It said there had been no detections in poultry or the agricultural production system.
Wildlife surveillance and laboratory testing are continuing. Authorities have said the risk to human health remains low, while urging biosecurity measures to protect poultry. 🧪
