In the car enthousiast community, driving on the German Autobahn is seen as some kind of heaven. The reality is that it, at most times, it is just more tiring than a ‘regular‘ highway. I have driven on the Autobahn now with numerous of my personal cars (trying to cruise at high speed) and with rental vans (trying to cruise at medium speed) and both are not really that enjoyable.
For the vast majority of the parts where there are no speed limit, it is actually almost impossible to cruise at above 180km/h (110 mph) for more than three minutes. Most of the Autobahn is just 2 lanes. Because there are so many trucks, which cruise at 80/85 km/h (50mph) people in slow cars try to take these over going 120 (75) you have to constantly brake. The people overtaking these trucks generally have no regard for your safety and will just position their car in front of you without looking in their mirror. Now, if you are driving fast you can detect this happening from afar using driving intuition, but it is still annoying. Yesterday I was driving basically the entirety of the A3 (direction Austria -> Netherlands) and clocked my average speed. My average speed was well under 120 km/h on average, despite going 200+ every opportunity I got. In the end, you are cruising 110 km/h for 15 minutes for every three minutes you can go 180 km/h.
And the typical German response to this is that ‘only NL/BE/CZ/FR plates overtake without looking’ that is simply not true, plenty of German plates in their Skoda Fabia’s or disgusting Opel Mokka’s do this aswell. Most NL/BE/FR plates are to afraid to move from behind the trucks. And these German pensioners also have no shame in staying in the overtaking lane for 20 minutes going maybe 10 km/h more than the trucks.
Not to mention the constant Baustelle which slows you down to a crawl, but also means that the next 15km after the Baustelle is slow as well. I know this is necessary to keep the roads in good condition, but it is still annoying.
When you can reach high speeds for more than 2 minutes it can be very enjoyable. The reality is that it is only really possible on Sunday mornings in November. #cars source
