🌊 The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network’s Status of…

🌊 The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network’s Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025 says average global hard-coral cover in 2020–24 was 9.5% below its 1980–2009 reference level.

The assessment combines more than 87,000 surveys across over 36,000 reef sites in 123 reef-bearing countries, territories and economies. It describes the dataset as the largest coral-reef benthic-cover monitoring collection assembled to date.

Researchers say repeated bleaching is reducing the time reefs have to mature and reproduce. Bleaching occurs when stressed corals expel the algae that provide much of their food and colour; recovery can occur, but prolonged stress raises the risk of mortality. 🪸

The report’s figures do not yet fully capture the effects of the latest global bleaching event. That means the assessment is a benchmark for reef condition entering the event, not a final estimate of its damage.

The consequences extend beyond coral cover: reef structure supports marine habitat, fisheries, tourism and coastal protection. The report’s release was accompanied by evidence that Australia’s reefs are following the broader global decline. 🌡️
