Nepal’s confirmed flood death toll has risen to 469 after the cross-border Himalayan disaster, while large numbers of people remain missing in Nepal and Tibet. 🌊
The immediate new threat is an overflowing barrier lake created when the glacier collapse and mudslide blocked a river. Authorities said about 3 million cubic metres of additional water could enter it over the next three days.
A barrier lake is water held behind a temporary natural dam of debris. If the blockage overtops or erodes, it can release a new downstream surge; Nepalese authorities told people and rescue workers to stay away from riverbanks. ⚠️
Searches and relief operations have been hampered by damaged roads, bridges, power and phone networks. The Red Cross estimates about 93,000 people may have been affected, while officials continue monitoring the lake and reconciling casualty and missing-person counts.
