Lord Henry's character in 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'
There seem to be multiple schools of thought surrounding Henry:
1. Some say he's a crossroads devil who made a faustian bargain with Dorian in the very first scene, and goads dorian into further degeneracy for his pleasure.
2. Others believe he's a bag of hot air who vastly overestimates his wit (this is corroborated by his eloquent yet ultimately self-contradictory and substanceless epigrams). He may not be aware of the effect his words have on Dorian as shown by his obstinate denial that dorian could ever murder someone.
3. Finally, there are those who think him to be a bored noble who vicariously lives out his fantasies through dorian's life. He leads a seemingly mundane and straight-laced existence, and does not wish to discard it for a life of hedonism.
He is a fascinating character up to interpretation, personally I am of the third opinion. What do you think of Lord Henry?
