For those who have read The Master and Margarita: preparation required?
I am planning to read Bulgakov's *The Master and Margarita* this year. I know that it is, at least in part, a critique of Stalinist Russia, of which I know very little beyond the history books. I am not averse to doing a little homework in conjunction with reading a great work, as I'd like to appreciate it for what it is. Feel free to debate literary theory as well, if you'd like.
For those of that have read it: is cultural context and historical knowledge required, or helpful? If so, any suggestions on where to start?
