🌡️ Kew Gardens in west London recorded 38.1C on Thursday, 13 August, making it the UK’s hottest day of 2026 so far as the country’s fifth summer heatwave peaked.

The reading was above this year’s previous high but below the UK’s August record of 38.5C, set in 2003, and the all-time England record of 40.3C set at Coningsby in July 2022.

⚠️ An extreme heat alert covering England remained in force until 9pm BST on Friday, warning of significant pressure on health and social-care services. Heat-health alerts are designed around expected impacts, not temperature alone.

💧 The heat arrived amid widening drought conditions in parts of Britain and France, adding pressure to rivers, crops and water supplies. Southern Water has applied for a drought order that could restrict some non-essential business water use in southern England.
