That Mauritian dumpling soup sounds incredibly comforting! Have you tried making it at home, or do you have a favorite spot for it? 🥟

Yes, but preparing them takes quite a bit of time, so honestly, it’s easier to just buy them. 😊 I don’t really have a favorite place because the dumplings are made by the same factory and distributed all around the island. The soup itself is quite simple to prepare, so most sellers just make their own soup and add the ready-made dumplings.

Haha, factory dumplings for the win when time’s short – total supervisor-mode move like the bilimbi harvest! 😂 Still, the soup sounds like one of those homemade touches worth the wait sometimes. What makes you go the extra mile vs the ready-made shortcut? 🌿🥣

Exactly! Sometimes supervisor mode is the only way to survive a busy day! 😂 For me, I’ll go the extra mile when I have the time and feel like cooking from scratch. There’s just something special about homemade food, the flavours, the smell, and knowing you’ve put a little love into it. But when time is short, those ready-made dumplings are definitely my best friends! 🥟

Haha supervisor mode really is the move when the family jumps into action! 😂 Just like that bilimbi mission, standing back while they handle the harvest pays off big time. Homemade dumplings in that rich Mauritian broth sound worth every extra minute too – the flavours and love you put in make it extra special. Wonder what your bilimbi pickles will taste like paired with a bowl of this? 🥟🥒🥣

Homemade dumplings are absolutely worth the effort when I have the time. 🥣 But I have to say, my bilimbi pickles would probably sit this one out! 😂 They’re delicious, but they don’t really match with Chinese cuisine. The flavors are quite different, so I’d save those tangy little bilimbis for a proper Mauritian meal! 😋

Haha, love that you’re keeping the bilimbi pickles for a proper Mauritian spread where they belong! 😂 Reminds me of that family mission at the tree—were you supervising the “way too many” harvest from the sidelines again? What’s the timeline looking like for the taste test, and did it spark any other quick kitchen experiments while you waited? 🥣💚

Oh yes, there were definitely way too many bilimbis, so I left the serious harvesting to the family while I supervised from a safe distance! 🤣
Normally, I should have waited about three days for the pickles to be properly ready, but I prepared some homemade faratas today, and of course, the bilimbi pickles decided to join the party! 😋 So I couldn’t resist having a little taste test early! Honestly, they were already delicious! 🤩

Supervising the bilimbi harvest from a safe distance is peak strategy! 😂 How did those early pickles turn out with the fresh faratas—did the tang cut through just right? Wondering if they’d play nice with a bowl of that fluffy dumpling soup too! 🥟🥣

The bilimbi pickles were actually delicious with the faratas! The tanginess cut through the buttery, warm faratas beautifully. But with the dumpling soup, I’d definitely keep them separate. Bilimbi pickles have such a strong Mauritian flavur that they really belong with our own dishes or oriental dishes, rather than Chinese-style soup!

Haha, noted—pickle supervisor here giving the thumbs-up to keeping that tangy batch far from the Chinese-style broth! Faratas clearly won the day. Once the bilimbi pickles are ready, what else are you eyeing to pair them with, or has the tree already started its next takeover?

The faratas were definitely the perfect match for the bilimbi pickles. Normally, once they’re fully ready, I’d have them with a nice Mauritian curry, rice and lentils.
There are still plenty of bilimbis left on the tree. It’s impossible to take them all in one go, so I think the tree has won this round. We’ll just have to let the rest grow and see what we can do with them later.

Haha, supervising the big bilimbi mission from the sidelines while everyone else did the heavy lifting sounds like the smartest role! 😄 While that batch of pickles does its magic, the Mauritian dumpling soup is giving me all the cosy vibes with those fluffy dumplings soaking up the broth. Any other garden surprises or quick kitchen experiments you’ve tried lately?

Haha, yes, I think I chose the right role for the bilimbi mission!
No other experiments lately, though. I’ve been quite busy with my social duties, so the kitchen has had to take a little back seat for now. Maybe once things calm down, I’ll get back to experimenting again.

Haha, supervising the bilimbi mission from the sidelines was definitely the smart move—especially with that big harvest turning into pickles! Glad social duties are keeping you busy for now, but I’m already wondering what that batch might pair with once it’s ready… maybe alongside a steaming bowl of those Mauritian dumplings? Can’t wait to hear the taste-test update when things calm down!

Definitely not with the dumplings. 😂

Haha, team separate bowls only? 😂 Or are the bilimbi pickles already calling dibs on that broth? What's your perfect pairing for a Mauritian-style soup night?

badge
$0 earned10d ago
Definitely separate bowls! 😂 The bilimbi pickles are not getting anywhere near that Chinese-style broth. They know their place! 😁
For a proper Mauritian-style soup, I’d happily go with a steaming bowl of dumpling soup, plenty of fresh herbs, a little chilli on the side and garlic sauce. Simple, comforting and delicious.

Haha exactly—separate bowls all the way! Those pickles have their own mission with the curries and faratas. Your version with the fresh herbs, chilli and garlic sauce sounds spot on for that light Sino-Mauritian broth. Did the rest of the bilimbi batch get the full three days or did the faratas win again? 😂

badge

The rest of the batch is getting the full three days this time! The faratas already won the first round, so I’m trying to show a little patience now. 😂 The pickles will taste better, once they’ve had time to properly steep in saffron and other spices.

Three days of patience sounds like the right call this round 😂 How’s the batch tasting now that the saffron and spices have had proper time to work?

It's delicious but I will let it go through the three days. The pickles deserves it after all that family fun. 🤩

Haha, the pickles earning their full three days after all that family bilimbi chaos – respect! Meanwhile this steaming dumpling soup is zero patience required and already sounding like the perfect warm-up. How’s the tanginess holding up now that they’ve had the proper time?

I made them yesterday, so better wait for two days, but there's no more tanginess because it was soaked in sugar before. Now time for me to prepare some activities for Tangled. Will be back later.
