“There are more than 70 definitions that are published for intelligence and there is no agreement on what it is, even within a given field,” said lead author Andre Kessler, professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.
The latest study on goldenrods, flowers found in North America, Europe, and Asia, revealed that when beetles eat them, the plants emit a chemical signaling to the insects that they are damaged and not a good food source.
Nearby goldenrods detected the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and activated the same defense mechanism to avoid being eaten.
'This would fit our definition of intelligence,' Kessler explained.
In 2021, the team found that goldenrods can detect higher ratios of far-red light, which is reflected off the leaves of nearby plants.
This light affects plant growth. When neighboring plants sense that a goldenrod is being eaten, they respond by growing faster and releasing more defense chemicals.
