Cup of Gold Hey all, I've got a question. I admit I'm late…

Cup of Gold

Hey all, I've got a question. I admit I'm late when I say this, but I'm now discovering John Steinback's works, and as with every other author, I'm trying to read every one of their published works in order. And, well, Steinback's debut was Cup of Gold.

I'm now halfway through, and, I find it strange I say this, but besides the few conversations with Merlin (mostly Robert's) and the holy-shit moment when I realized the story's based on Captain Morgan, the guy from the rum bottle (/s), I dislike the story so far. Not just dislike, I genuinely hate it.
I've never DNF'd a novel, but I'm strongly thinking about doing so with this one. The language is bland, terribly so. The plot is interesting, but the writing surrounding it is deeply unimaginative. The events themselves are so lukewarmly described they feel like citing off facts. No setting nor action descriptions. When I say that, I don't mean that I expected a grand, action-packed swashbuckling adventure. But I wanted to visualize this great new world that calls Henry. I wanted to feel something other than just being told it. He felt this. She felt that. It's so on the nose.

The odd great dialogue and metaphors and poetic language Steinback weaves in is probably the only part that keeps getting me through the writing, and the only part that gives me hope that Steinback will get better as time progresses. But it doesn't look like it will happen in this novel.

So, the question: will Cup of Gold get better? (I doubt so, but still . . .) And, more importantly, is this bland, descriptionless, skip-over-everything style just Steinback's narrative voice? Because, so far, I don't see any literary genius at work -- I see an incredibly mediocre piece of writing that I have little incentive to continue but for the fact that I'm stubborn and need to read everything.

Thanks!
