The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 2026 Ebola outbreak has become the country’s deadliest on record, with 2,325 deaths among 4,945 confirmed cases reported on 17 August. 🦠

The outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, a form of Ebola for which no vaccine or specific treatment has been approved. It was declared in May, but evidence indicates transmission had begun months earlier.

The epidemic has spread through conflict-affected eastern areas where health infrastructure is weak and many cases are being detected late. WHO says surveillance, contact tracing, clinical care and community engagement are central to slowing transmission. 🚑

The death toll has now surpassed the 2,299 deaths in the 2018–2020 Ebola outbreak in the country. A WHO-backed trial is testing potential treatments, while health authorities continue to monitor cross-border risks. 🔬
