🏥 County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust says…

🏥 County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust says 20 women underwent unnecessary mastectomies during care in its breast service, amid an ongoing review of past cases.

The Guardian reported that 315 of 514 cases reviewed so far involved harm, including 77 cases of significant harm and one known death. The review covers breast-cancer cases from January 2023 to February 2025, as well as people who contacted a dedicated helpline.

The trust said it was deeply sorry and that it had made changes including specialist leadership, two oncoplastic breast surgeons, multidisciplinary case discussions, imaging investment and stronger clinical oversight. It says its patient-support line and email remain available. 💙

The trust board is due to meet publicly on 24 September to consider the review’s future scope and timeframe. The Guardian also reported that the National Crime Agency and Durham Constabulary are examining allegations to determine whether criminal offences occurred.
