I've never paid more than 150€ for a smartphone and I haven't missed out on anything I care about by doing so.
So yeah, it's insane to me that people spend upwards of a thousand euros on a high end phone. I don't get why anyone would. I mean I guess if you care that much about status symbols...
To me, a phone is a disposable product, so I will spend as little on it as I can get away with. For a couple of reasons:
1. It will break. It will drop on the floor, on the ground, something like that, sooner or later.
2. Manufacturers will not update Android forever. I personally wouldn't care, because I still use devices running even Android 5 to this day as secondary devices (watching videos, listening to audio) but as my main device, I know that sooner or later some app that I need to use will no longer be supported on the version of Android my phone is stuck with.
3. I want to use my phone as little as possible. To me it's a tool. I have a strong dislike on how society is acting like we need to be be basically cyborgs with these devices, and I want no part in it. It still makes more sense to me to have a smartphone than a dumb phone at this point in my life, but I don't want to get married to it.
So here is my phone history. I used exclusively Nokia feature phones running Symbian (remember those? I'm getting old...) up and until I got a
1. Samsung Galaxy Gio. It was 0€, because I got it from my older brother, because he upgraded his phone. I don't remember the exact year this was, probably something like 2012-2014. Eventually, the headphone jack in this phone broke so I got a
2. Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. This is the first smartphone I bought myself. I believe it was something like 120-130€. This was in late 2015 I think. I didn't care, I just wanted something and it was pretty much the cheapest phone at the time. It really couldn't multitask at all because it had so little RAM, but I got by.
3. Huawei Honor 7. I got this for 0€, from my ex girlfriend. She got a new phone from her dad, so I got her old phone (which she had also recieved from her dad, lol). I think this was sometime in 2018. I used this phone for quite a while.
4. Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. I got this for 0€ from my older brother again. I switched back and forth between using this and the Honor 7, because I couldn't decide which device I liked more. It eventually broke when it dropped to the ground and never powered on again, rip.
5. Motorola Moto G31. Since my S4 Mini broke, I started using Honor 7 again. But then the Honor 7 dropped on the floor at work and the screen shattered. I could've technically still continued using it, but I didn't want microglass particles around my small children. So I started shopping for a brand new phone, first time in many years. It was late 2022, and I got a good deal for this phone at 150€. I don't care, it works and it works remarkably well. I plan to use it until it breaks or some app that I need to use requires a newer version of Android :)
So that's it. To me a smartphone is a disposable tool and I will find the best price/performance ratio phone every time, I'll go as cheap as possible as long as the user experience is still tolerable. Back then there was a large difference between a flagship and a cheap phone. A cheap phone barely got you by with serious downsides. Nowadays? Seems not so much. I don't care about 1000 AI cameras or whatever they're advertising with, lmao.
