Ulysses - James Joyce

I was recently reminded that Ulysses is one of the hardest books to read, and for that reason I have decided to challenge myself.

I started reading the first episode, but before I get too far into it I wanted to ask anybody who has read it how well I need to remember The Odyssey.

I know that Ulysses is supposed to roughly parallel the Odyssey, but I barely remember the Odyssey. Do I need to read it again?

What I do remember of it is long and tedious prose about Odysseus and his boring son, Telemachus. And something about a Golden Fleece, although I might be confusing that with another novel. I’m sure to others it’s a great tale of adventure, travel, and seizing the day. I felt it was much too serious for a book about adventure. In contrast, Ulysses is supposed to be hilarious, but I’m afraid I won’t get the intended humor if I don’t know my Odyssey well enough.

Any insight?
