Indoor evaporative coolers vs central air

This assumes you live somewhere hot and dry, and use AC in the summers.

Our central air recently went out and it was going to take 4 days for the part I needed. I live in the American SW, where it gets very hot and is very dry.

While waiting for the part I considered buying a window ac for the bedroom to get us through the next four days, but what I landed on instead was an indoor evaporative cooler (swamp cooler).

This leverages the fact that state changes for evaporating water takes a lot of heat energy that is pulled from the air. And they are hugely more efficient to run than ACs.

They have downsides, in that they don't work well in humid environments, you have to refill it with water every 3-8 hours, and they can't get a room as cold as AC can. But, now that my AC is fixed, I've found that I can run it 4-5 degrees warmer than I normally would and the swamp cooler will easily cool the room (or entire house, if you buy a big enough unit) 5 degrees or more. This morning I woke up early and turned off the swamp cooler because I was too cold.

Saves a lot of money on your electric bill, as an evaporative cooler uses about as much energy as a fan compared to the huge power draw of central air.
