When Christians say "I'll pray for you." Do they mean it…

When Christians say "I'll pray for you." Do they mean it literally? What does that even mean?

When someone says they'll pray for me, are they literally thinking of our interaction next time they pray to God or is it more of a "sending you good vibes thing?"

What does it even mean to pray for someone? Are you asking God to bless that person? Are they thanking God for our interaction? Are they telling God I'm a good person?

I was raised Catholic but this wasn't a common expression in my church. I'm now an atheist, so I don't really need the educated opinion of other atheists because that's predictable. I'm more so curious about the direct anecdotal experience of Christians who use this expression.
