What makes interiority "good" in your reading experience?
i know this is subjective and very much all about individual taste, but ive been thinking a lot about what makes interiority good. two books that i've recently read and thought have good interiority are Sally Rooney (Normal People) and Elaine Hsieh Chou (Disorientation), but then someone I was talking said they though that Elaine's writing was less interiority. HOWEVER. that person also said that third person "doesn't do interiority very well" which I hugely disagree with, but then my OCD kicked in and made me second guess myself over and over. am i actually full of shit? do i not know what interiority is?
so this led me to comparing my very wide array of books, from some old college texts to new buys, from YA to lit fic, and i got to realize that im not sure if i have strict parameters on "good" interiority because i know even across genres, how its written/used is very different. one would think, for instance, that romance books would have good interiority because internal thoughts are technically interiority...until you realize that in so many books in the genre, the characters' only thoughts are \*horny, horny, horny, sexy, sexy, sexy, i can only think about how attracted i am to the LI\*. that's one example (obvs theres plenty of romance books that excel at interiority, but a majority of the ones i have read don't really do anything beyond what i mentioned). i was told Stephen Graham Jones does interiority well and i agree, but i found that it felt like his writing was more focused on maintaining voice and style (also, i learned i can't stand his writing, even if i think he's an incredible writer).
so, i wanted to ask y'all what makes interiority (to you) "good" interiority to you as readers because now im just curious (i still disagree with that person but it got me thinking, which is fun 90% of the time). is it because it's interwoven with characterization and exposition well? is it because of good social commentary?
other stories I thought had good interiority (again, could be full of shit, so please tell me if i am):
