Building custom software for others is great as a job, but terrible as a business.
You need to gather requirements, design it, code it, test it, mantain it, keep it alive, and keep it secured.
As an employed developer? Great, job security.
As a business owner? Awful. No other business requires so much effort to make a dollar. Literally, no other.
The thing is, software is very different from other businesses, because software is "alive", unlike other services or products you can sell.
I'd rather sell physical stuff. Much much much much simpler, scales way better, and 95% less stressful.
Now SaaS on the other hand, that's the way. Because you are basically productizing your effort and now the customer adapts to you, not the other way around. Scales much much much MUCH more. SaaS is the way for software businesses, not building custom software for others. Because it can actually pay off for all the effort and stress. With custom built stuff for clients there's a ceiling for such aspects that you just can't surpass. #programming #technology #dev
