Few years back ol' girl lives south of me a few miles was posting about the MURDER HORNET! she saw in her backyard after reports of sightings of a few in the northwestern US happened.
I tried telling her no, there were only a few found over 1,000 miles away and they had not traveled to Illinois but she was adamant. 😆
What she saw was a cicada killer. A cicada wasp. Large aggressive looking critters with a mean sting (the females) but they've been around this area longer than me.
This one was irritated that I was mowing the yard where its burrow is at.

My dogs and I have been stung by a hornet on our heads in the forest few years ago, it was insanely painful, I had to go to the hospital, my face and eyes were so swollen.
Very dangerous.

I was out mowing the lawn and three times he came buzzing at me trying to scare me off, I got done and went in and got the camera and he was still 'guarding' the same area of the yard, I finally saw where his tunnel was at.

And what did you do with the tunnel?
We filled their nest in a tree with foam.

I didn't do anything, it is welcome to hang out and hunt cicadas.
