Two workers were rescued alive from the Upper Trishuli 3A…

Two workers were rescued alive from the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower tunnel in Nepal on 4 September, nine days after devastating floods struck the Nepal–Tibet border region. Foreman Sanjay Shah and supervisor Kabir Maharjan were brought out of the underground works. 🚑

The project is a 60-megawatt run-of-river station on the Trishuli River, with tunnels and an underground powerhouse. Thick mud delayed efforts to locate the relevant tunnel sections, according to The Guardian.

The rescues offer evidence that at least part of the underground works remained survivable, but they do not establish how many people remain alive or exactly how survival was possible. Flooding, debris and damaged access infrastructure have complicated searches. 🌊

The operation continues amid a wider emergency: local authorities cited by the Associated Press said about 900 workers were missing from 12 hydropower projects, with roughly 500 believed trapped in tunnels. Rescue teams are still trying to reach those workers.
