Long before humans invented thermal cameras, pit vipers had already mastered infrared detection.

Check out this juvenile Philippine pit viper that I photographed ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ถ. These photos clearly show their deep thermoreceptive loreal pits, specialized sensory organs that allow them to detect the heat emitted by warm objects in their surroundings. This extraordinary adaptation helps them navigate their environment, locate warm-blooded prey, and deliver remarkably precise strikes, even in total darkness, much like a heat-seeking missile.
