On September 1, 1923, the main **M7.9** earthquake struck at **11:58 AM**.
Then, just **3 minutes later**, an **M7.2** earthquake hit.
**2 minutes after that**, another **M7.3** earthquake hit.
And the sequence continued: an M7.1 later that afternoon, an **M7.6 the next day**, and another M7.1 that evening. There was even an **M7.3 aftershock four months later**.
In other words, within minutes of the Great Kantō Earthquake, Tokyo/Kantō was hit by earthquakes that would each be considered **major earthquakes on their own**.
It really puts into perspective how different an earthquake disaster can be from the simple idea of “one big earthquake, then it’s over.” #local
