I just finished Wuthering Heights. I feel like it’s all I…

I just finished Wuthering Heights.

I feel like it’s all I can think about. I’m still collecting my thoughts and piecing together exactly what made me love it as much as I do.

I’ve gotten more into reading this year especially in the last few months and have been trying to read a good mix between classic literature and modern works. I’ve gotten really into gothic literature new and old though.

I actually admit that I saw the Wuthering Heights movie in February with some friends who love the book, and dragged me along. I enjoyed it a lot (I know that’s controversial). I hadn’t ever thought about reading this book before, but when they explained to me how different it was and how it was missing the second half I was immediately curious and knew I needed to read it.

Well I finally started it this past week and it’s been the only thing I can think about. The atmosphere is the thing I think about the most in this book. The world feels so tangible and real.

And the way the story is laid out through Nelly’s retelling feels like experiencing the most fascinating bit of gossip you’ve ever heard. I was hooked in the first few pages and found the story gripping from beginning to end.

The characters are endlessly cruel and frustrating but at times I understand their motives and can even in some ways sympathize with them. I ended up really caring about Cathy Linton and what happened to her.

The book is endlessly tragic, but has an ending that makes me feel like all isn’t lost which I appreciate, though I know some don’t care for.

I’m still collecting my thoughts on this book but wow I loved it. I think it might genuinely be my favorite or close to it.
