Random train thought I thought would make a fun little chat:
There are a few cultures/nations around the world that we associated with a strong literary tradition/producing a lot of notable figures. Ireland has notable writers falling out of the sky throughout its history and still today; Russia gave us many of the great classics; The USA (and esp around New York) has a rich, vibrant literary tradition.
As translations become more prominent and higher quality, we're starting to see huge booms of work from different parts of the world and an appreciation is starting to surge for places that we previously didn't see/hear from much. But what places are really producing something special that we don't often talk about?
There are lots of examples of individual writers from countries we talk about a lot - László Krasznahorkai from Hungary for example - but that doesn't mean as a whole we go "Aw fuck, Hungary is producing an amazing catalogue of work!" What places are either currently experiencing a rich literary movement or did so in the past? (idk, maybe Slovenia in the 1930s was going crazy, or Estonia in the '70s!)
Or put another way: what lesser known countries might compete with the torrent of Irish talent going on? #entertainment
