How did James Watson go from a degree and PhD in zoology, to ‘discovering’ the double helix? Is this flexibility in the different branches still possible?

Knew for a while that Watson was part of the team who ‘discovered’ the double helix, never knew his degree and PhD were in zoology? ( maybe I’m asking a useless question and he did a degree in molecular biology too, but I’ve not seen anything saying he has?)

It seems like a great jump from zoology to molecular biology but I have a feeling that in those times it was much easier to move from the different branches for research, is this still done today?
