Indiana nursing homes need to just unionize at this point 🤦♀️
I'm a CNA here and our nursing homes are nearly all government owned. In facilities owned by companies like American Senior Communities, Trilogy Healthcare, and Brickyard Healthcare (formerly Golden Living Centers) we're being staffed so low that day shift can barely get through 1 or 2 check and changes.

But if we say anything then we start getting retaliated against. Everyone thinks if they just go to another nursing home it'll help and then they're mad when it's the exact same issues. Like, you literally cannot even tell management that you need a 2nd person for a 2 assist resident without having to worry they'll start retaliating. Then they create situations where we have to work off the clock or more retaliation if we bring it to their attention that they're creating these issues.

Heck, ASC and Brickyard interrogates us and management starts verbally abusing you if they even think there's any kind of concerted activity going on and Trilogy Healthcare puts in their handbook that they're anti union and they all pretend to listen to their employees. Yeah. That's why we have such high turnover and are among the worst staffed facilities in the nation despite receiving more supplemental Medicaid funding than nearly any other state. Most of the CNAs and nurses I know have mentioned wanting to unionize so they at least have more job security. But then everyone's too afraid to. 2 of the nursing homes here are Teamsters now and idk how many times I've heard coworkers and residents even mention that we need to unionize so that staff have a say in our staffing ratios at the least and don't have to worry so much about being fired just for wanting safer conditions.

I just wish people would actually do it instead of saying how nice it'd be but then not wanting to do anything about it. It's like every nursing home has maybe 1 or 2 staff members actually trying to do stuff but everyone would rather complain and work 10 different nursing homes a year and not do anything at all to improve it so they don't have to job hop or deal with miserable and unsafe conditions.
