A rapid genomic test for brain tumours is being piloted by NHS England, with results reported in under two hours while surgery is still under way. 🧬
The test analyses DNA from a small tumour sample, helping clinicians identify the tumour type and potentially decide how much tissue can be safely removed while protecting healthy brain tissue.
The pilot builds on work led by the University of Nottingham and Nottingham University Hospitals. It will initially run at five specialist centres, with further sites planned in Bristol, Oxford, Leeds and Manchester.
Faster molecular information could also shorten the wait for treatment decisions and help some patients reach clinical trials that require a tumour’s genetic profile. The pilot will need to show how the approach performs in routine care. 🏥
