My friend only talks to me when the bedroom lights are off. Tonight, I turned on the lamp.

Lucas was your ordinary teenager. He was the kid you’d walk past at the mall, see studying at the library, or spot walking his dog in the park. But Lucas was isolated. To him, high school was just background noise, and everyone else was an acquaintance, as he had very few friends. But that loneliness is exactly what let it in.

It started at the beginning of August. Lucas lay awake at some ungodly hour of the morning when a faint, disembodied whisper drifted from the dark space beside his mattress.

"*Hello.*"

Lucas bolted upright, his heart hammering against his ribs. The voice was deeply unsettling, it was as thin as a sheet of winter snow, yet smooth and thick like a liquid. Thinking he was trapped in a lucid dream, Lucas stammered back into the dark.

"*Hello? Who are you?*"

"*I'm whoever you'd like me to be*," the stranger whispered.

It felt like a line straight out of a childhood horror book. Lucas was terrified, but his isolation pushed him forward. "*What do you mean by that?*"

"*Well... I can be a friend. I can be a foe. I can be anything and everything at once.*"

"*I'd prefer anything but a foe*," Lucas managed to say.

The dark space seemed to settle. "*Then so it is.*"

From that night onward, Lucas had someone to talk to. Every single night, he poured out his secrets, his problems, and his loneliness to the voice in the dark. It was the first time in his life he felt truly understood. But everything changed last night. Lucas asked the one question he shouldn't have.

"*Hey... how come I never see you when the sun starts to enter the room?*"

The darkness grew violently quiet. After what felt like an eternity, the voice croaked, raw and hollow:

"*I don't like how I look.*"

Moved by sudden empathy, Lucas leaned over the edge of his mattress. "*Hey, nothing to worry about. I've been insecure before, too. You don't have to hide.*"

A quiet, wet chuckle echoed from the floorboards. Then, a heavy silence returned, shattering like glass when Lucas whispered:

"*May I see you?*"

The voice restrained itself before exhaling a final breath: "*Do as you wish.*"

Excitedly, Lucas reached out and flicked on his bedside lamp. The warmth of the light flooded the room, and Lucas's vocal cords paralyzed. Staring directly up at him from the floor was a violently mangled, bloodied face. Massive, bulbous eyes bulged out of its sockets, unblinking, hovering over a jaw filled with jagged, discolored teeth.

Lucas tried to scream, scrambling backward until his spine slammed into the wall.

The entity didn't move fast. It just slowly locked its bulging eyes onto him and inched closer, dragging its weight across the floor. Thick, dark blood trickled down its pale skin, pooling heavily onto Lucas's bed sheets.

"*Be careful what you wish for, young man,*" it whispered.

But it wasn't the thin, smooth voice from before. It was a wet, gurgling raspy sound. Lucas was engulfed into the dark.

Lucas hasn't posted on his social media since last night. But I found his phone on his bed today. The lamp was still turned on, burning hot. And right now, as the sun is setting, I can hear a thin, smooth voice coming from the shadow beneath his closet door.

It just said hello to me. I think it's looking for a new friend.
