A study led by the Million Marker Research Institute found…

A study led by the Million Marker Research Institute found unlabeled chemicals in nearly all of 113 personal-care and cleaning products it tested. Researchers reported that 85% contained at least one unlabeled chemical with a known or suspected health hazard. 🧴

The peer-reviewed analysis covered 12 product categories, including shampoos, lotions, sunscreens and cleaning products. It detected 3,141 unique chemicals, with products averaging more than three times as many detected chemicals as were listed on their labels.

The findings highlight a limit of label-reading: US rules generally allow fragrance and flavor ingredients in cosmetics to be grouped under broad terms rather than named individually. The study also reported cases in which detected chemicals conflicted with package claims. 🔬

The research does not determine the health risk for every user, since risk also depends on exposure level and route. Million Marker’s findings are likely to add to scrutiny of ingredient disclosure and consumer-product safety oversight.
