Amazing books with abrupt, stupid endings.
The book I'm referring to is called >!Awake and Dreaming, by Kit Pearson.!<
I borrowed a book that I enjoyed a lot as a kid from the library. It was only about 200 pages so I tore through it in less than an hour. The author never released any sequels despite the book having a lot of unanswered questions and interesting plot threads that could have been explored. The book builds all of these plotlines up and right before they turn into something concrete, the book ends with "The future might be uncertain but we'll be okay with the power of love!". It feels as if 1/3 of the book is missing, and the smash cut to the ending is especially jarring when the rest of the book is not hopeful or positive at all.
The thing is, it stuck in my mind. The whole reason I revisited the book was because I genuinely believed I was missing memories as a kid but nope, the book just builds up momentum until it feels like everything's about to reach a dramatic climax and then says "ok, go away now". It's especially heartbreaking because I LOVED the tone, relatability, humanity, and grounded nature of the rest of the story. The characters felt so real that I have been imagining where they are now, what they are doing et cetera. It was very disappointing that that was the last we'll ever hear from them, as the book came out in 1996 and was never massively popular.
Is this a widespread problem in literature? If so, is it because authors just run out of ideas? I'm stumped and a little angry about this. In my head, different endings for the story have been playing out and literally any of them would have been better than what was actually printed.
