Skin And Soul

Chapter 2: The Art of the Fall
The transformation was a slow, agonizing process. To suppress an immortal soul into a fragile cage of flesh felt like pouring molten iron into a glass vial. Azazel stood in the abandoned brickyard three blocks from John’s workshop, focusing her mind. Her great midnight wings folded into her spine; her obsidian scales softened into smooth, pale skin. The molten gold of her eyes faded into a quiet, ordinary brown.
She did not fashion herself into a striking beauty. She knew the mortal world—beauty drew too many eyes, too much suspicion. Instead, she chose the form of a plain, unassuming woman with gentle features and hands that looked as though they knew hard work. She dressed in a simple, slightly faded denim jacket and a cotton skirt. She chose the name Elena.
She waited near the corner of the avenue where John always walked home, her heart—now beating with a fragile, human rhythm—thumping wildly against her ribs.
When she saw his familiar figure emerge from the machine shop, his jacket slung over one shoulder, she gave the signal.
From the shadows of a nearby alley, three lesser demons she had subjugated and bound to her will stepped out. To John’s mortal eyes, they looked merely like rough, dangerous men. They intercepted Elena, violently grabbing her arm and knocking her bag of groceries to the pavement. Oranges scattered across the dirty asphalt.
"Hey! Let her go!"
John’s voice was exactly as she had heard it in her dreams—firm, grounded, and entirely unhesitating. He didn't look at the size of the men; he only saw someone in trouble.
John rushed forward, throwing himself into the fray. He was a human, but his job at the shop had given him a lean, hard-earned strength. He caught the first "man" with a heavy right hook to the jaw. The second attacker lunged, landing a hard blow to John’s ribs that made him gasp, but John refused to back down. He grabbed a heavy discarded iron pipe from the curb and swung it with precise, mechanical force.
Following Azazel’s strict, unspoken commands, the disguised demons feigned terror, backing away into the crowded street and disappearing into the afternoon traffic.
John dropped the pipe, his chest heaving, his jaw already bruising. He turned to her immediately. "Are you alright? Did they hurt you?"
Elena looked up at him, her human eyes welling with a mixture of feigned fright and an overwhelming, breathless affection. "I am now," she whispered, her voice soft and trembling. "Thank you. You didn't have to do that."
John offered a warm, slightly crooked smile despite his split lip. "Of course I did. I'm John."
"Elena," she replied, her small hand slipping into his rough, grease-stained palm. The moment their skin met, a jolt of pure, unadulterated warmth shot through her core. For three years, she had hovered millimeters away. Finally, she was holding him.
