My friend was riding his e-bike home when police stopped him. The officer was going to let him go with a warning — but a letter sent to the wrong address put him in ICE detention.
A close friend of mine, Miguel, is currently sitting in ICE detention in South Florida.
Miguel has no criminal record. The situation that led to this happened incredibly fast.
He was riding his e-bike home when police stopped him. The officer initially planned to let him go with just a warning. But when they ran his name, a bench warrant appeared connected to an immigration notice that had been mailed in 2025 to an address he hadn’t lived at in years.
Because of that warrant, Miguel had to be taken into custody.
In the span of a few minutes, a completely normal ride home turned into detention.
If you know Miguel, you know the kind of person he is. He’s the guy who convinces you to go on a run when you don’t want to, who somehow stays optimistic no matter what’s going on, and who has a deep love for life, freedom, and the ideals of democracy.
He’s also inexplicably obsessed with Taylor Swift and the movie Wicked and can probably quote half of it from memory.
Right now Miguel is waiting for his immigration hearing. The only way he can come home while his case moves through court is by posting an immigration bond, which must be paid in full. The bond amount could reach $15,000, which is far beyond what most of us can cover alone.
Some friends and I started a fundraiser to try to bring him home while he fights his case.
If anyone wants the link, I’m happy to share it. Even just sharing his story helps.
