Just finished reading A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

As the title suggests, I just finished reading A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara and wanted to share my thoughts. I would also love it for people to share what they think about the novel, as I know this is one that has received lots of criticism.

I am normally a sci-fi/fantasy reader, but I like to step outside of the genre as well, which is why I chose to read this book. But going from finishing the Dungeon Crawler Carl series to reading this book was an especially jarring shift. It's like going from watching Marvel movies to watching Netflix's Adolescence. While I devoured the DCC books, in order to fully appreciate A Little Life, I had to slow down and take time to digest. To be honest, the length of the book was a bit draining. I didn't realize it would be so long! Note to self: next time when choosing a book that's outside of what I normally enjoy, check the length.

That said, I felt the book was beautifully moving. It made me feel so many things, and it made me consider how I view my own life (sorry for the unimaginative word choice here but that's all I got lol). I think that if I had read this book a year ago, I would not have enjoyed it and most likely would not have finished it. I probably would have thought of it as a 800-page trauma dump. But since then, I've been in therapy for personal reasons, and have learned a lot more about my feelings. I feel like the work I've done there helped me appreciate what this book is saying a lot more.

I realize that this is not really a book review and more of a personal experience, but that's ok since I'm not a critic. Anyway, I would love to hear what others thought about it.

TLDR: The length was tiring but I really liked it and found it to be really moving. Let me know how you think.
