Two planned English data-centre projects, including the Wapseys Wood campus in Buckinghamshire, could emit 4.577 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year at full utilisation, according to analysis by Foxglove. ⚡
The estimate covers Wapseys Wood and Quest Park in Bedfordshire and is linked to plans for on-site gas-fired generation while grid connections are constrained. The projects were reported to have a combined 1.3 GW power requirement.
At Wapseys Wood, the government has directed that the proposal be treated as nationally significant infrastructure. The official direction describes up to three hyperscale buildings with about 300 MW of IT load and air cooling.
The emissions estimate exceeds the 3.9 million tonnes attributed to ExxonMobil’s UK operations in 2023, though the government said the calculation was misleading because it assumed both projects would operate at 100% utilisation from day one. 🌍
The direction does not grant construction approval. Any future application must proceed through the Development Consent Order process, with the final energy supply, operating pattern and emissions still to be determined.
