Tokaj wine region - Tokaj
At the southeastern foot of the Tokaj Mountains, the world-famous Tokaj wine region covers an area of about 6,200 hectares. Thanks to its winemaking and local traditions, as well as its special architectural heritage, Tokaj has become the center and symbol of the region over the years, which has also brought Hungary world fame. In 2002, the wine region of the Tokaj Mountains was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
According to our knowledge today, the name of Aszús grape wine, which founded the world career of Tokaj wines, first appeared in written sources around 1570. However, due to its special quality, Tokaj wine soon gained a leading role: the Rákóczi estate in Hegyalja was already documented as the center of domestic aszú winemaking in the first half of the 17th century.
The specialty of the region is that the fruits here contain the highest level of sweetness among the world's wine regions, but the largest amount is given by the dry portions.
In addition to Tokaj, Mád, Tállya, Bodrogkeresztúr, Bodrogkisfalud and Mezőzombor are also among the most significant production areas of the wine region. These settlements are part of the world heritage along with the historic cellars in Tolcsva, the Rákóczi Cellar in Sárospatak, the Ungvári Cellar in Sátoraljaújhely, the cellars in Herzegkút and the Wine Museum of Tokaj Merchant House.
