⚖️ The International Criminal Court has convicted former Séléka commander Mahamat Said Abdel Kani of crimes against humanity, including torture, over abuses at a detention facility in Bangui during the Central African Republic’s 2013 conflict.

Judges found Said guilty on four crimes-against-humanity counts, including persecution and torture. Reuters reported that the court dismissed several war-crimes charges after concluding the armed conflict had ended at the relevant time.

The case concerned detainees seen as supporters of former president François Bozizé. Séléka rebels seized power in 2013, and their rule was followed by conflict with anti-balaka militias.

The trial opened in September 2022 and included 130 hearings, 58 prosecution witnesses, three defence witnesses and participation by 32 victims, according to the ICC. 🕊️

A separate ICC procedure will determine Said’s sentence. The conviction may also be appealed to the court’s Appeals Chamber.
